Dr. Nielsen, a native of Denmark, grew up in Ethiopia and California. His parents settled in Auburn, California in 1969. He received his medical degree from Loma Linda University and completed an internship in General Surgery in Norway and another in Internal Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Following that, Dr. Nielsen attended Baylor College of Medicine, where he did retina research at the Cullen Eye Institute in Houston, Texas. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Chicago and his two-year Retina-Vitreous Fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He then spent four years with Inland Retina Consultants in southern California.
Dr. Nielsen came to Reno in March, 1994 to form Nevada Retina Associates. As a surgical and medical retina specialist, his goal was to build relationships with the ophthalmologists and optometrists in the area so that patients all over Northern Nevada and some areas of California would not have to go to Sacramento, the Bay Area, or Las Vegas for treatment. Dr. Nielsen spends his free time on his ranch in Reno with his wife Donna and their two daughters, raising goats and chickens. They enjoy attending local festivals and events and traveling the world.
